mikehoolboom News from Iceland's Gunnuhver's geothermal area and more. Stunning recordings, closely observed, from massive rolling surf to crackling hydrophone underwater reveries, wind storms but also wind gently blowing leaves from the trail. It's a beauty. Favorite track: Selfoss Moss.

about

In may 2019 I had the opportunity to spend a week in Iceland to gather field recordings.
The tracks presented here are montages of multiple field recordings, each track linked to a specific location.

Source recordings were made at 192kHz using a variety of condenser mics, contact mics and hydrophones. Post-mastering, the recordings were downsampled to 48kHz.
The original 192kHz files are available upon request.

Solheimajokull glacier, 10.05.2019
As I lowered my hydrophones into a large crack in the ice, what I heard was not the silence of an unmoveable mass I had expected - rather, my ears were greeted with an unruly, sometimes even comical, chorus of insectoid pops, clicks, gurgles, toy laser-beams and whoops : this fragile giant, brimming with life hidden below centuries-old ice. It must have been quite a absurd sight - a lone figure, in the middle of this mass of black ice, headphones on, laughing out loud.
